Grand Finale FIFA World Cup 2010

What an amazing show South Africa put up for the closing ceremony. That South Africa is ubuntu was clearly proved by the tremendous turn out of celebrities and sports loving folks from all round the world for the month long giant football carnival. And the pièce de résistance was the appearance of Nelson Mandela for the spectacular closing ceremony. That made the occasion really special.

Well, what can you say of the Spanish team?! Young and exuberant they displayed unique team spirit that disproved sceptics’ claims that Spain was ridden with factionalism and rivalry. Iker Casillas and his band of merry men demonstrated grit, skill, style and the will to make it to the top. What a proud moment for Spain when they lifted the 18 carat gold trophy for the first time in the history of World Cup. Well done, Spain!

Spare a tear for Netherlands; third time unlucky. They did well to reach the finals. However, team wrestling is perhaps the sport they will do really well at should they wish to give it a shot! For whatever they were playing for the first half of the game did not resemble football even remotely. All credit to Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben; their talent and skill showed through even amongst the clamour of fouls and rough play by the Dutch side.

Oracle Paul’s prophecy came true and as much ado is being made of Paul’s clairvoyance we have nearly forgotten that there was another body that had predicted Spain would win the World Cup 2010. Yes, our own captain Baichung Bhutia had said right at the beginning of the tournament that Spain was a likely contender for this year’s WC. And I am sure he had a little bit more to his prediction than Paul ;)!
