How to Counter Empty Threats

The secret behind a threat is fear. Those who are wont to threaten are the ones who are most scared themselves. Their threats are usually bluffs using the spectre of influential people or of dire repercussion and the like, meant to frighten the faint-hearted. The only way to deal with such bogus threats is to call the person's bluff. In nine cases out of ten the persons who have been threatening you will enmesh themselves in their own yarn of lies and deceit. Calling off a bully’s bluff will not only expose the person’s cowardice but will also bring the truth out in the open.

How does one go about calling people’s bluffs?
  • ·         All you need to do is sit back and take stock of the situation calmly and assess how much importance you need to give to these threats. How much damage can they do and are they justified? Thinking about the situation rationally will help to allay your fears and recognise an empty threat for what it is.
  • ·         Talk things over with family or close friends and take professional help if necessary. This will keep you connected to your support group and boost your confidence.
  • ·         Usually taking the fight back to the aggressor can be effective. Taking flight or feeling pressured only helps to aggravate the trauma and prompts people to retaliate foolishly.
  • ·         The biggest step is to confront or confirm with the people who have been used as spectres to gauge the reality and listen to their side of the story. Usually those used to dropping names and using influential people to threaten others are misrepresenting facts in an effort to gain these people's support.
Set records straight and don't be afraid. The truth will out and good will always prevail over evil. :D
