Chaplin Cinema Hall to be razed and renamed after Uttam Kumar

I wonder what mahanayak Uttam Kumar would have to say to this proposal. In a bid to woo the gentry of Kolkata “Didi” has proposed that Chaplin Cinema Hall, one of the oldest cinema halls of Calcutta, be demolished and a new modernized version be built in memory of Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar. Uttam prostab! No harm in having a new movie theater in memory of Uttam Kumar- a very well deserved memorial- for who can question Uttam Kumar’s contribution to Bengali and even Indian cinema?
But to rename Chaplin? Sir Charles Chaplin KBE, one of the most renowned film stars and directors (of the silent film period) the world has ever produced- in short, a genius! Not only did Chaplin create the world’s greatest films, he introduced and used techniques that were original and painstaking. His penchant for perfection, which often resulted in several yards of film being wasted, saw the emergence of brilliant films like The Kid, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Gold Rush, The Tramp- the list is long and memorable. His comedies brought laughter and cheer to thousands of broken hearts and hearths during the terrible years of the world wars. His films are immortal and they continue to gladden people and bring a smile to every face that watches them till this day!
Uttam Kumar, a great actor, superstar and bhadralok in every way was well-known for his gentlemanliness and decency. How would he have reacted to such a suggestion? He would probably have been pained and embarrassed at such a plan because only a true artiste can give due tribute to another. That, of course, is something our political big-wigs know nothing about!
